As a Major General Command Pilot with over 5000 hours flying time, the Air Force provided a flyby at his funeral consisting of two T-1A Jayhawk training aircraft. This aircraft is used for used for advanced training for students selected to fly airlift or tanker aircraft and to support navigator training. This aircraft selection honored the years Ernie spent in Air Training Command, first as the commander of the 3500 wing at Reese AFB, then as the Deputy Chief of Staff for Operations of the Air Training Command. In this picture the two aircraft are approaching from the southeast, having come over the Pentagon
