As his last assignment while at Ramstein, Ernie was the commander of the 12th Air Force Combat Operations Center in Kindsbach, aka "The Cave". It was an underground facility that was originally part of the "Seigfried Line". As can be seen in the picture, Ernie smoked. He started smoking cigarettes during WWII to kill time between missions. When General LeMay became Chief of Staff of the Air Force, a significant number of senior Air Force officers switched from cigarettes to cigars. Whether they were trying to emulate General LeMay or not will be left the observer's judgement :). In the 90s with his slowly deteriorating health associated with old age, Ernie finally gave up cigars. This picture was taken during a 1958 exercise.
