This picture was probably taken in the late summer, early fall of 1954. Ernie and an airman, possibly his crew chief Dick Davis, are front of his F-86F Sabre Jet. On the sliding cockpit you can see his name and rank under the word "Pilot". Notice the ubiquitous red color scheme extending to their baseball caps and his flight helmet on the wing between them. The helmet was very elaborately painted with martial imagery and had the squadron emblem on the far side.
