This picture was probably taken in the late summer, early fall of 1954 at Clovis (Cannon) AFB, NM. Ernie and Peter are front of his F-86F Sabre Jet. Notice the three dark stripes separated by white lines in the back half of the fuselage - they identified the 563rd squadron commander's aircraft. All 563rd aircraft had red stripes on them. Two stripes designated a flight leader, a single stripe signified a regular fighter. The tail displays the 388th group emblem - a white lightning bolt on a colored field with the 563rd using a red field. The other two squadrons in the 388th used blue (561st) and yellow (562nd) stripes and tails. The group commander's aircraft also had 3 stripes, one of each color. The squadron emblem was a sabre sword piercing the central spade image on an ace of spades.
