Helen and Ernie celebrating New Year's Eve for the start of 1954, probably at the Langley AFB Officers' Club. This is the earliest picture showing Ernie sporting his silver maple leaf, a Lieutenant Colonel's rank insignia. The first day he came home wearing it and showed it off to his son Edward, Edward got very upset that he had traded "your pretty gold leaf for that ugly silver one". The third man in the picture is Ace Edmunds, a fellow fighter pilot. Ace introduced Ernie to the Big Bethel Reservoir outside Hampton where he, Ernie, and Ed went fishing several times
