Ernie and Helen met sometime after V-E day (8 May 1945), had a whirlwind romance of about 6 weeks, and were married on 19 July 1945. Their original intention to be married in the States changed when Ernie was scheduled for direct redeployment to the Pacific with no possible chance to go home first. In the years following their marriage, Helen would tell the story: "Someone took a picture of us from behind at a USO show. When Ernie saw the picture he asked 'Who is that bald-headed guy sitting next to Helen'. Upon realization that the 'bald-headed guy' was him, he decided to propose before he lost all his hair." Ernie never dignified that story with an comment. In the year before his death, while being asked to go over and talk about the old family photographs, he saw this picture and commented "That's your mother and me at a USO Show". On the back of the picture Helen had written "Weimar - That's Baldy on the right putting on the glasses". His son then exclaimed "Oh, that's THE picture", to which Ernie responded "Me and my big mouth". The best guess is that this picture was taken sometime during June 1945. Note: this picture has been cropped significantly from the original to highlight Helen and Ernie
