Ernie is showing off his P-38 the "Flyin' Bum" to several nurses of the 91st evacuation hospital. Helen is on the left. The two nurses on the right are Brownie Thain and Mary Dean. The location is variously identified as Kadloida or Kleda Germany, although an internet search fails to turn up any such place. The "Flyin' Bum" was Ernie's P-38 with the 70th TFW. It was his second P-38 during the war and it had been named by a pilot who had transfered out of the unit. While flying with the 570th he named his first P-38 "Porky Jr" in memory of his older brother's P-38 "Porky II". The "Flyin' Bum" had a plexiglass nose for a bombardier. Ernie flew with Helen in the nose on several occasions. Based on it's placement in Helen's album, this picture was probably taken during June 1943
