Per Ed Goodhue: "One of my favorites - Mrs Cragg (after clearing with the Command Post) played this joke on the Boss - and called me the next day to get it in the paper!"
An ORI was an "Operational Readiness Inspection" - a team of inspectors arrived unannounced in a C-135, declared an alert with mission assignment details and watched the Wing's performance.
The reality of this drawing was a bit different than indicated above. That summer Ernie's older son Ed was home from college, and had purchased a tape recorder. While learning how to use it, he accidently recorded the alert signal that was routinely sounded at noon in quarters. The warbling signal was incredibly annoying and loud enough to wake the dead. A day or so later he was playing with the recorder some more, and played back the sound around dinner time. Ernie was half way out the door before he learned the truth. Several weeks later, during a dinner party. It was Ed, not Helen who conspired with Operations to have the Command Post call the party and tell Ernie that "There is a C-135 twenty minutes out requesting landing clearance". He looked arround the room at all the well lubricated wing leaders and turned white. |
